What are the Facilities provided to the retired President of India? | Privileges of ex-Indian President and it's Spouse

 The Incumbent President Shri Ramnath Kovind is all set to demit his office on 24th June'22, following which the newly appointed President Draupadi Murmu will take oath on 25th and will aquire accomodation is the Rashtrapati Bhawan or Presidents House in New Delhi. In my Blog published on 26th June'22, I talked about the Powers of the Indian President and similarly in another Blog published on 11th June'22, I talked about how the President of India is elected and what are it's privileges, tenure, oath and removal. In today's Blog I will talk about the facilities Provided to the retired President of India along with it's spouse who can also be called The First Lady.

The President's Emoluments and Pension Act of 1951 lays down the rules for providing Pension, Facilities and medical treatment to the retired President as well as it's spouse also.

Privileges of the Ex-President.

  1. Any person who has held the office of the President or has resigned or stepped down due to expiration of it's term is entitled to a Pension of half amount of his salary for the remainder of his life. (The current salary of Indian President is Rs.5 Lakh per month so the pension will be Rs. 2.5 Lakh per month)
  2. He/she is also entitled to the use of a furnished residence including it's maintenance without the payment of any rent, 2 telephones one for the Internet and another for the Broadband Connectivity, one mobile phone with national roaming facility and a motor car along with a secretarial staff consisting of a Private Secretary, one Additional Private Secretary, one Personal Assistant, 2 Peons, and office expenses the cost of which should not exceed Rs. 60,000/- per annum.
  3. He/she is also entitled to medical assistance and treatment free of charge.
  4. Also he/she can travel anywhere in India accompanied by one person by the highest class of Air, Rail or Steamer service free of any charge.

Privileges of the Spouse of the Ex-President.

  1. The spouse of any person WHO DIES while holding the office of the President or has resigned or stepped down due to the expiration of it's term shall be entitled to a family pension of half the amount of the pension of the President for the remainder of his/her life. (The current pension of Indian President is Rs. 2.5 Lakh per month so the family pension alloted to the spouse will be Rs. 1.25 Lakh per month)
  2. The spouse shall also be entitled to medical assistance and treatment free of charge.
  3. He/she is also entitled to the use of a furnished residence including it's maintenance without payment of any license fees, telephone and a motor car free of charges for the remainder of his/her life along with a secretarial staff consisting of a Private Secretary and a Peon and office expenses the cost of which should not exceed Rs. 12,000/- per annum. 
  4. He/she can also travel anywhere in India, in a calendar year to twelve single journeys, by the highest class of Air, Rail or Steamer service free of any charge accompanied by a companion or a relative.

All the charges and financial facilities provided to both the President and it's spouse will be paid from the Consolidated Fund of India.
